American Corner Jericho Reflects on Gains Made by African-Americans with the Screening of Malcolm X
To commemorate Black History Month, the American Corner in Jericho screened the film Malcolm X for 35 members of the popular American film club, sparking a lively discussion about the challenges faced by African Americans in pre-Civil Rights America and the enormous changes that have occurred in American society since then. The 35 students, a combination of boys and girls aged 12-18, said they could relate to the struggle for equality championed by Malcolm X, but questioned his methods, expressing greater admiration for the teachings and the inclusive, non-violent approach of Martin Luther King, Jr. The students also said that American society must have made great strides in ensuring equality and equal opportunity for all its citizens, irrespective of race or religion, pointing to prominent Black Americans such as President Obama and former Secretaries of State Condoleezza Rice and Colin Powell.
