Local Grant Summaries 2009

GAZA STRIP

  1. Basma Society for Culture and the Arts

    Al Rimal, Gaza Strip
    Combating Violence and Enhancing the Culture of Forgiveness and Dialogue among Youth
    This project will work with youth aged 12 to 17 years, using theater and acting to build social awareness and address the concepts of violence, discrimination, lack of confidence, intolerance, forgiveness, and respect within their communities.


  2. Palestinian Women’s Information and Media Center (PWIC)

    Beit Lahia, Beit Hanoon and Jabalia, Gaza Strip
    Capacity Building of Palestinian Women in the Gaza Strip through Dissemination of Democracy, Human Rights and Gender Sensitivity
    This project will work to develop the capacity of 450 women, ages 20-35. Through a series of intensive training programs and workshops on democracy, human rights and gender sensitivity, the project will contribute towards an improved overall status of women. The trainings and workshops are followed by community lobbying activities. The women will construct campaigns and meet with key community leaders, addressing critical women’s issues.


  3. Society Voice Foundation (SVF)

    Gaza City, Gaza Strip
    Empower Future Young Leadership on Parliamentary Work and Monitoring Corruption
    This project aims to increase the capacity and knowledge of youth ages 22-35 years in local leadership. Through the creation of a youth parliament, radio programs and town hall meetings, the project will teach youth about transparency, accountability and integrity systems.

  1. Al-Marsad

    Ramallah
    Strengthening Youth Participation in Increasing the Impartiality of Local Governance Institutions:
    This project will teach Palestinian youth ages 17-25 about civic engagement, the role of local councils and the means of interaction between them. Through a series of workshops and the formation of local youth councils, the program will make youth aware of their ability to influence local governing bodies.


  2. Al Nayzak

    Jerusalem
    Extracurricular Education and Scientific Innovation
    This project seeks to enhance students’ educational experiences by providing activities that attract them to scientific learning, critical and creative thinking. Talented Jerusalem students (ages 14-17) will have access to a hospitable learning environment where teachers, students and parents can learn and innovate. The project aims to help students expand their minds and offers an alternative to fanatical or extremist approaches. Activities include participation in a scientific summer camp, followed by weekly creative thinking sessions, hands on science and technology sessions combined with access to Al-Nayzak resources.


  3. Panorama, Center for Dissemination of Democracy & Community Development

    West Bank/Gaza
    Youth Taking Action
    This project aims at building the capacity of young community leaders and creating a pool of responsible and responsive citizens from Palestinian universities in West Bank/Gaza. These youth will work as a Forum for the rule of law. Through this project, Panorama will work to engage and foster youth involvement in Palestinian decision-making process and will provide a platform of debate on democratization, rule of law and civil peace.


  4. PeacePlayers International – Middle East (PPI-ME)

    Ramallah & Tulkarm
    BasketPal Leadership Development Program
    This project uses the game of basketball to teach leadership and life skills to socio-economically disadvantaged girls ages 10 – 16 years and provides professional development training for young Palestinian coaches and educators. By engaging young girls in basketball activities, the project promotes equal participation of women in the public domain. Outstanding youth are then invited to BasketPal’s Leadership Development Program (LDP), giving them a chance to become intern basketball coaches. This grooms them as leaders in their communities and creates role models for young Palestinian girls.


  5. Tomorrow’s Youth Organization (TYO)

    Nablus
    Enriching our Community: Learning to Serve, Serving to Read:
    This project will work with university students and young mothers to introduce the idea of civic activism and self improvement. Through trainings on volunteerism, leadership, public speaking and literacy training, this project will emphasize the value of volunteerism and public service while providing valuable literacy skills to at risk children in the Nablus area.
